My e-mail host is Version 2011 (Build 15.4.3555.0308) of Windows Live Mail. my OS is Windows 7; my browser is Google Chrome Version 33.0.1750.154 m.
In the last week or so, when I've clicked on the icon on the Taskbar to open Windows Live Mail, WLM opens, but on top of it I get a sign-in box. I am unable to copy it or select it, so I can't do a screen shot to show you (correct me if there is a way to do it). At the top of the box it says "Sign in to Windows Live Mail. Your Windows Live Services are updated to match any changes you make when you are signed in." Then there's a link to "Learn more." My e-mail address is filled in (correctly); it's visible. Then there is a row of dots in the password space (not visible). Above this is an error message that says, "The email address or password is incorrect. Please try again." The typical "Forgot your password?" is underneath. Then it says "Remember me and sign me in automatically," and that box is checked, but obviously the system is *not* doing that. Then there's a link, "Forget me," and two radio buttons, Sign In and Cancel.
Next, it says, "Don't have a Windows Live ID? Sign up." At the bottom, Privacy statement and Terms of use.
Here's the thing. In spite of the error, if I either close the box by clicking on the x, or simply hit Escape, the box disappears, and my e-mail is fine, with new messages, etc. I don't recall changing any settings connected with Windows Live Mail. I have not clicked on any of the links in the sign-in box, because supposedly there is some sort of phishing scam going around about signing into Google Drive, which I don't use and don't know anything about. I vaguely remember seeing that page somewhere sometime back, and this new appearance of the sign-in box -- especially since I can still open my e-mail with no problem -- makes me nervous. If I deleted the password, for example, and typed it again (thinking it was incorrect, even though it had been auto-filled), wouldn’t that be a great way to steal my password?
Let me clarify that I have never needed to log into e-mail. It's on my own computer, to which no one else has access (at least physically).
Can you help? I want to get rid of the sign-in box, and would like to know if I need to do anything else. Thanks.
